UPDATE FROM NEW ORLEANSThursday, 9/22, 2:45PM ET Hurricane Rita is already showing its face in New Orleans.
Cynthia just called and she said that Lake Pontchartrain,
normally as flat as a mirror, has white caps. The wind is
kicking up and the temperature has dropped a good 15 degrees.
This is not good news for the thousands of animals still
stranded in the city.
According to Cynthia, rescue workers were let out into the
city today but they had to be out by noon. Cynthia and her
friends from HSMO rescued a few cats and one large
pot-bellied pig. Now they are on their way back to the
Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, LA.
If the city gets flooded again, the thousands of animals
still there will be in serious peril. As you have seen on
our website, many dogs are tied or chained up. These dogs will
likely drown. As for the animals who survive any potential
flood, if rescue workers can't get back in immediately,
they will also likely die.
This did not have to happen. If the powers that be would
have used more of their resources, these animals could already
be out of harms way. Why are there still thousands of animals
still in New Orleans after three weeks? The answer boils down
to red tape.
To add insult to injury, Lamar-Dixon now has to be evacuated.
The hundreds (thousands?) of animals in this temporary shelter
will be moved north and out of harms way.
Cynthia and Laura (our volunteer from California who is also at
Lamar-Dixon) are trying to decide what to do. Whatever God you
pray to, now's a good time to pray for the safety of the animals
and the rescue workers on the ground.
